What is Hemoglobin A1c?
A1c, also known as hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c, or glycated hemoglobin, is a form of hemoglobin that is chemically linked to a sugar. The A1c test measures the average level of glucose (sugar) in the blood over the past two to three months, reflecting the average lifespan of red blood cells. Here’s why the A1c test is significant:
Long-term Glucose Monitoring: Unlike a standard blood glucose test which provides a snapshot of your blood sugar level at a single moment, the A1c test shows an average over time, giving a more comprehensive overview of how well your blood sugar is being managed over several months.
Diabetes Management and Diagnosis: It is primarily used to diagnose type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, and is critical in managing diabetes. By measuring how much glucose is bound to hemoglobin, the test provides a picture of the overall effectiveness of the existing diabetes management plan.
No Fasting Required: Unlike some blood glucose tests, fasting is not required for an A1c test, making it more convenient.
The results of the A1c test are expressed as a percentage:
Normal: Below 5.7%
Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
Diabetes: 6.5% or higher on two separate tests
Understanding your A1c level is essential for monitoring the effectiveness of diabetes treatment and for early intervention to prevent complications associated with high blood sugar levels.
We charge $54.99 for this test.
